15:1 with Marcel Wüst

Marcel Wüst is a former German professional road racer that has won 14 stages in the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España, and a total of sixty-six career victories spread across a twelve year career (1988-2000). Following Marcel’s retirement he managed Team Coast from ’02-’03, when Jan Ullrich had Lance Armstrong well and truly on the ropes. Today Marcel continues his media work, commentating on television and writing the monthly bike tests for Procycling magazine, whilst hosting and managing a number of training camps for cyclists on the sunny roads of Mallorca. Well, that's enough of the intro's, let's see what Marcel had to say when hit with 15 of the best...

You can ride with anyone from past or present, who would it be?
Charles Pélissier.

You’re having a bad day on the bike what is the morale boosting item in the mussette bag?
Coke, ice cold!

What's the race you should have won - near misses or just dreaming?
Any race in Asia where I never competed - because it's the only continent where I never won a race.

Everyone likes going downhill fast - what's your favourite descent?
I did Alto de la Linea in Columbia when I raced the Clasico RCN. From 3400m down to 300m above sea level - 60km of real downhill, that was awesome! Didn't like the climbing though.

What’s the best bike you've ever ridden?
During my Procycling bike testing career I really lost track...sorry guys!

Do you have a golden moment when riding/racing that you always look back on with a smile?
Taking the polka dot jersey after the opening time trial of the Tour in Futuroscope 2000, knowing that there would be no hills at all for the next 3 days.

And the worst moment?
Crashing out of my first Tour in 1992 on stage one and not even making it to France (the race started in San Sebastian).

What is your favourite après race beverage?
Shandy, ice cold.

You hit shuffle on your I-Pod, what’s the track you hope comes up top of the list?
Eye of the Tiger by Survivor

What’s your take on the UCI bike weight limit of 6.8kg? Good for the sport or got to go?
It's outdated and should take into consideration the development which has been made in bicycle design over the last years. The main thing is my bike’s under the limit!

What’s your favourite new product?
PowerBar Ride Shots

What does cycling mean to you?
It was, is and always will be an important part of my life. It's fun, emotion, passion and a lifestyle.

Where is your favourite place to ride?
Noosa, Australia - it's OK for the riding itself, and great for the company and the after riding infrastructure!

If you could have one super power what would it be?
To make people happy - including myself.

And finally, the debate continues…Shimano or Campag?
I ride SRAM Red on all on my bikes. What was the question again?

Some interesting and surprising answers there Marcel, certainly never had you bookmarked as a man to rock out to Eye of the Tiger, but that’s the beauty of the 15:1. Thanks for the insight & see you on a bike test soon I hope!
